| Making our Environment Better to Serve You! |
|
Sierra Corporation is proud to announce that we have moved our hosted Exchange and email hosting environment in-house. This will enable better manageability and productivity. Our secure environment is equipped with a natural gas backup generator.
Sierra's network uses Cox's fiber backbone, which is connected to the internet directly, with no other vendors in between. By doing this, we have been able to add further layers of anti-virus and anti-spam protection. At present, our network is only being utilized at 35%, which ensures clients the capability to email large files without degradation. At the same time, we have the capability to increase our network by ten-fold. Unlike others, we provide granual backup for each mailbox with fourteen day retention and deleted mailboxes are archived to Sierra's data vault. Also, unlike others, we have devised local continuous replication on each database for ease of disaster recovery. Sierra provides service world-wide to many different organizations, both small and large.

| Microsoft Releases Update to Disable Autorun |
|
Microsoft has released an update (KB967715) in order to help prevent further spread of the Conficker Worm, which started affecting PCs in October 2008,. This “Non-Security” update from Microsoft will disable the Autorun feature on Windows computers. The Autorun feature was the major reason behind the spread of Conficker, as it would transfer itself through removable media such as CDs, flash drives and Network drives, exploiting Autorun to install itself and then spread doing the same.
The Update will change the registry key NoDriveTypeAutoRun making computers much safer from the threat of malicious software or a program executing itself without the user's knowledge. It will also eliminate the need for manually changing Autorun settings. An update can be obtained from Microsoft's Windows Update site or by referencing the KB number, KB967715, on a Windows download site.

| Zero-Day Vulnerability within Adobe Reader and Acrobat |
|
A zero-day flaw has been found in Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9 and earlier versions. Hackers are sending out malicious .pdf files with the Pidief Trojan (detected as Trojan.Pidief.E), if opened, it tries to exploit an un-patched processing error and creates a buffer overflow. This vulnerability can potentially cause the application to crash and possibly enable the attacker to control the system. First discovered in Japan, this threat seems to be spreading slowly.
Adobe is planning for a fix to the processing error for Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9 to be available March 11 and a fix for earlier versions to come about a week later. Some reports have said that disabling JavaScript in Adobe can prevent this vulnerability; however, it will not eliminate all risk since the vulnerability is not in the scripting engine. Adobe users should be sure to keep their antivirus up-to-date and only open email attachments from trusted individuals.
