Google started enabling IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) for their internet based gmail users on 24th October 2007. With this feature enabled, users can use start using their own favourite mail client software, such as Microsoft Outlook, Outlook express or any other IMAP support mail client or device with gmail to check their emails.
The main difference between POP and IMAP is, POP will download all the messages to your local machine, and then messages are read and managed locally. When users use IMAP, all the messages exist and are managed directly on the server.
With IMAP, you can use your IMAP enabled email client to access email without using the web browser and whatever changes you do to your email will update the server copy automatically, as it is synchronized with the server. This way the next time you login to your email using the web browser from a different location or device, you will see all the changes that you did with your IMAP connection.
Gmail users can also use their mobile phones such as Apple iPhone, Blackberries or any IMAP enabled cell phone to access gmail and they should be able to read, send, move, sort emails easily and it will synchronize with the gmail server automatically.
To enable the free IMAP feature in your gmail, all you have to do is click the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab in your gmail "Settings" and turn it on. Google is one of the first Internet based email providers to enable IMAP for free to their clients.
