| VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) Blocked by ISPs |
Some ISPs and governments seem concerned about the possibility of losing revenue from users of VoIP. This brings up the issue of internet neutrality and the ability of some to discriminate against others.
Here are the names of some ISPs that have been known to block VoIP users:
Clearwire USA, Madison River USA, Basil Telecom Brazil, Etisalat UAE, Shanghai Telecom China, Telmex Mexico, Cable & Wireless Caribbean, Belize Telecommunications Ltd. Belize, Deutsche Telecom.
Countries that have declared bans on VoIP are Panama, China, Saudi Arabia. There are a couple ways around a VoIP block by an ISP or government. An encrypted VPN is one option and another is an application called Bound-IP, which will thwart an ISP trying to block VoIP. It is also relevant to know that ISPs use firewalls on their networks, which may be set up to stop traffic that may cause a security problem and VoIP could be blocked for this reason. Take a look at your contract with your ISP provider to see if there are any traffic limitations.

Converting a Word file to a WordPerfect file |
For this purpose WordPerfect 11 or higher will be required. Open the Word file through WordPerfect 11 by going to File, Open, and then select a Microsoft Word document. Then use the Save As feature to save a copy of the Word document as WordPerfect file. This process will keep both the original Word Document and its copy on Word Perfect format. Caution: if upgrading from an older version of Corel WordPerfect to 11 or higher, then a BDE error in uninstalling the older version might require a registry clean up.

| Adobe Creative Suite 2 Users: Upgrade |
Adobe Systems will release Creative Suite 3 this month. The launch of Creative Suite 3 is considered by company executives as the biggest product launch in Adobe's history. It will include among other programs, Photoshop for photo editing and Dreamweaver for Web design. Although it was designed to run on 32-bit versions of Windows Vista (Home Premium, Business Enterprise and Ultimate,) they have no plans to support Windows Vista on the current version. The company released a document earlier this month describing its operating systems support plans and stated, "While some of its components, including Adobe InDesign CS2, Illustrator CS2 and Photoshop CS2, install and run under Windows Vista with only minor known issues, other components such as Acrobat 7.0 Professional do not support Windows Vista." However, Adobe said that it is not aware of any major problems for people who plan to run Creative Suite 2.3 on Vista. This does not include Acrobat 7.0 Professional, which does not work on any 64bit version of Windows. The suite will also run on Intel-based Macs.

The Cons of using the Yahoo Toolbar, Google Toolbar and Others |
Many users have found that downloading and using the Yahoo Toolbar or Google Toolbar has had a negative impact on their PC in several ways. These toolbars advertise themselves to be very helpful in being able to utilize their sites’ resources for browsing the internet in a much faster and effective fashion. In very minimal ways, they do. They allow you to use their search engines, which tend to be the best ones out there. However, these toolbars are basically worse for your computer than anything else. They eat up a lot of your memory and slow down the executable file known as explorer.exe, which is a huge application in the performance of your computer.
These toolbars also have anti-spy applications that are supposedly keeping your computer safe. This is false, because they do not catch nearly as much spyware as your anti-virus or even as much Microsoft does. Some users may still be able to browse at a decent speed, but many find that they encounter many errors when accessing certain sites, mainly those that require ActiveX Control installations. Please try and refrain from using these toolbars as they only clutter your general Internet Explorer Toolbar and slow down your performance. Please be careful when using the Yahoo website or the Google site as they will try and prompt you to download their toolbar. In order to get rid of these, please click on Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and find the toolbars within the list and hit Remove. A restart after the un-installation is a good idea.

IPv6 – Internet Protocol version 6 |
IP version 6 is the next generation of Internet Protocol designed by the ‘Internet Engineering Task Force, which is also known as IETF. IETF started designing the IPv6 in 1996 to replace the current version of Internet protocol version 4 also known as IPv4. IPv4 has been existent in the industry for nearly 20 years and it has started hitting its limitations because of more and more devices connecting to the internet. A major advantage of IPv6 over 32 bit IPv4 is that it uses 128 bit binary addresses and therefore it can have a vast range of unique IP addresses. Also, it has the capability of auto configuring once the supported device is connected to a routed IPv6 network and the capability for multicast by default. Additional features of new generation on Internet protocol:
- Better routing performance and services
- Efficient and hierarchical addressing and routing infrastructure
- Built-in security
- Better support for prioritized delivery
- New protocol for neighboring node interaction
- Extensibility
Most of the new operating systems and network devices support IPv6 by default, such as Windows Vista, Windows XP and Sun Solaris 8,9,10. Also, most networking devices and Operating systems can be upgraded to support the IPv6 with Firmware upgrades or additional third party software installations. Earlier versions of Windows did not ship with a built-in IPv6 support and Microsoft has an add-on for IPv6 implementation for their older operating systems. Although IPv6 has not officially become a standard yet, industry standard is moving towards IPv6 to allow for the increase in the number of addresses available for networked devices; every mobile phone and mobile electronic device would have its own address.

Resolving the Issue of a Jumping Cursor on a Laptop |
If your cursor on your laptop jumps around the page as you type it is caused by the laptop’s touch pad being too sensitive. It could be that the touch pad has begun processing your hand movements as a request for cursor movement. To resolve the problem and decrease the sensitivity of the touchpad try the following:
- - Click Start
- - Go into Settings
- - Control Panel
- - Then go into the tab for your touchpad. It will display all setting and features (Note: if the driver is not installed properly then these settings will not be visible.)
- - Decrease sensitivity to comfort level – ideally, set it to the center of the sensitivity meter.
Another reason the touchpad may be sensitive is because the speech recognition engine has turned on (Sapisvr.exe is Microsoft). Most manufacturers do not leave this feature on by default, but some do. Also, it might have malfunctioned if left on for a long period of time. When this happens, the sound of tapping on the keys picked up by the microphone is interpreted as voice commands. This causes the cursor to move erratically while typing in voice command equipped software, for e.g. Microsoft Word.
To remove Speech Recognition:
-
- Go to Control Panel
- - Click on Regional and Language Options
- - Click on the Languages tab
- - Click on the Details button
- - Click on Speech Recognition
- - Click the Remove button
