| Vulnerability in Adobe Flash, Reader & Acrobat |
|
US Dept. of Homeland Security’s CERT cybersecurity team is asking administrators and users to turn off Flash video in their Web browsers. Malicious users have discovered how to trigger an exploitable crash in Adobe Flash 9 and 10.
They have also reported the vulnerability in Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.1.2.
An attack can occur from just visiting a site or through PDF documents, which have Flash embedded in them for interactivity, however, so far it has only been confirmed as triggered on Window machines running Adobe Reader 9. Adobe is expecting to have a fix for Flash 9 and 10 out on July 30th and for Adobe Reader and Acrobat on July 31st.
Adobe is not suggesting to turn off Flash, but to manually delete the file - %ProgramFiles%\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\authplay.dll
Adobe is also suggesting the following – - Be cautious visiting websites you may not trust. - Be sure your anti-virus software is up-to-date - If running Windows Vista, consider using User Account Control.
Adobe recommends blocking access to a file named authplay.dll that ships with either Adobe Reader or Acrobat. To find the file use Windows Search (Start -> Search), type in the filename and search for it. When it is found, rename it to authplay-old.dll (for example), then rename it back to the original filename once the fix has been released. While the file is renamed, users will get an error message and possibly a crash when opening a PDF document with Flash embedded, but the risk of infection will be negated.

| Research In Motion Preparing to Launch Mac OS-Compatible Software |
|
Research In Motion announced in a blog post that it is preparing Mac OS-compatible software to allow its BlackBerry users to sync their devices with a Mac. The company expects to ship the Mac edition of BlackBerry Desktop Software to users in September. The Mac-specific desktop manager software will allow you to sync your iTunes® playlists, personal information such as contacts, tasks and appointments and install new software and games. It will also allow users to add and remove applications from their devices, perform updates to BlackBerry when they become available, backup and restore data, and even manage multiple devices. Basically, similar to what iTunes does for the iPhone; it will allow you to select individual calendars to sync, choose your playlists (and even add random music to your leftover space), and see how much storage you have left on the device. Once the software is released, all aspects of the BlackBerry® smartphone will be manageable from a Mac computer. The software will be available for Mac OS X 10.5.5 and above.
The new product is one of many RIM has been pushing to keep its grip on the ever-expanding and ever-demanding smartphone market. Earlier this year, for instance, it launched an App store, BlackBerry App World with thousands of applications from such companies as Salesforce.com. By giving Mac and BlackBerry users a new desktop manager to effortlessly sync with iTunes is a component of RIM's market strategy.
