SchoolBooksOnSale.com is a new venture owned by Sierra Corporation, to connect people securely to buy and sell their used textbooks. This new collaboration is founded on a green principle, allowing individuals to re-use textbooks from Kindergarten to Intermediate School, to High School, to College.

The existing system for students buying school books heavily favors book producers. Our hope in developing the site is to provide an economical and green way for students of all ages to buy and sell their books.

Most book selling websites charge a listing fee, and then take a percentage of your final sale. SchoolBooksOnSale.com charges a single fee per book, freeing sellers to maximize their profit. We felt that charging a percentage creates an adversarial relationship between the website and its users. By only charging a flat rate regardless of whether your book sells for $10 or $100, people selling their books become partners with the site.

Turnover rates for textbooks are extremely high. Just before the beginning of the school year, a flurry of buying and selling happens. Unfortunately, this makes the used textbook market unsuitable for most venues,, where items are often listed and sold within minutes. SchoolBooksOnSale.com uses an "offer" system, where a book seller lists an asking price, and other users make anonymous bids. Sellers have 5 days to review bids. Because of the quickness of the market, transactions normally happen within days.

Another important feature, Wishlists, enable users to register a request for a book. When someone lists a book on their Wishlist for sale, they are instantly notified by e-mail when their Wished book is listed by another user. The system also provides a uniquely high level of personal security, allowing users to exchange messages through the website, without ever uniquely identifying themselves to each other. Military grade RSA encryption and strong human security auditing is used as an additional level of security, securing users' information against threats from the Internet.
